The Santa Monica Classic

Last month my Twitter/FB/IG friend, Marie, invited me to run the Santa Monica Classic with her.  She signed up for the 5k but I was feeling bold and signed up for the 10k.  I actually signed up for the 10k right after I finished running my first 5k a couple of weeks ago.

The day before the race I made the drive from OC to LA to pick up my race packet at FrontRunners.IMG_4489

The night before, I laid out everything I needed so I wouldn’t forget anything: my shirt and shorts from Ink-n-Burn, my Injinji compression socks, my knee straps, my Garmin, Hammer Gel, and Amphipod water bottle…

It was an early wake up for me on the morning of the race.  I got up at 4 am and was hoping to get out the door by 5.  I had no idea what kind of traffic, road closures or parking issues to expect so I wanted to get there early.  I fueled up with Shakeology.

My wife and kids wanted to come along… I got them up at 4:30 so we were on the road by 5:20.  They napped in the car as I navigated my way around the road closures and found a parking spot at the pier where the race was going to finish.  We were there early… about 6:30 and the 10k didn’t start until 8 am.  So we walked around and enjoyed the scenery.

The starting line was a pretty good distance from the pier so I parted from my family and did my warm-up jog towards the start.  The 5k started at 7:30 so I kept an eye out for my friend Marie.  I finally met her about 5 minutes before her race.

IMG_4511 IMG_4514 IMG_4507 IMG_4506

Once the 5k runners took off, the nerves set it.  I had to go to the restroom.  I started to doubt myself… I was thinking that maybe I should have signed up for the 5k instead.  But, there was no turning back now.

I had a goal.  I wanted to finish the 10k.  I wanted to finish the 10k in under an hour.

I stretched.  I consumed my Hammer Gel.  I took my place in the corral.IMG_4508 IMG_4526 IMG_4525

The anthem played and the air horn blew… We were off!

IMG_4528 IMG_4529 IMG_4530 IMG_4533

The start was a little slow… there were so many people.  Eventually, the crowd broke up a little and I was able to find a good steady pace.  The first couple of miles were painless but I was trying to stay aware of my pace so I didn’t wear myself out too soon.  Mile 3 was great, running along Ocean Ave… the palm trees and the water.

IMG_4538 IMG_4539 Probably the toughest part of the race route was the hill we had to climb to reach the turn around at Mile 4.  As tough as it was, I didn’t want to stop to take a break.  I just kept putting one foot in front of the other.IMG_4541

I finally made the turn and it was all down hill to the Mile 5 check point!  I was feeling great!  I still had energy… sadly my iPhone didn’t.  It died and unfortunately my RunKeeper stats were now void.  Thankfully I had my Garmin on me.  Here are the last pics I took before my iPhone died on me.

IMG_4543 IMG_4544

At the Mile 5 checkpoint I was still feeling good.  I could see the Santa Monica Pier in the horizon.  I thought to myself that I could start to pick up the pace for this last mile… I was trying to run at a 7:30 min/pace.  I started passing a few people but unfortunately I was only able to keep that pace up for about .6 of the mile.  I ran out of steam and started to feel some pain in my abdomen… stupid rookie mistake, I guess.  When I slowed down, I still able to maintain a 9:30 pace.

I saw the finish line and pushed myself to go faster.  I tried looking around for my wife and kids but I couldn’t find them in the crowd.  I finished!  As I ran through the finish line I was given my finisher’s shades.

I pulled out my Mophie external battery for my phone, took some pics, and called my family.

IMG_4546 IMG_4547

I was stoked!  I reached my goal!  I finished the 10k in under an hour.  My chip time was 56:51.1 with an average pace of 9:10.  Out of over 1500 runners, I came in 594th… I’ll take it!

After the race, I met up with my family and we went to the expo to pick up my shirt.  I considered getting a massage but the line was too long.IMG_4582My family and I took our time to relax and enjoy the scenery at the pier.  We even met up with Marie and her family at the Coffee Bean at Pacific Park.IMG_4558 IMG_4565 IMG_4566 IMG_4567

It was a great morning!  I’m looking forward to my next race… I have my sights on the Long Beach 1/2 Marathon in October.

How was  your weekend?  Did you compete?  How was it?

Learning to Breathe

It’s official.  I have obstructive sleep apnea.  Last month’s sleep study proved that my airway is being blocked during my sleep.  So not only do I snore, but I’m only getting about 84% of the oxygen I need.  Scary!

This week, I finally received my Continuous Positive Airway Pressure or CPAP machine.  On Tuesday, I attended an hour-long training session on how to use it at Apria Healthcare in Brea.  We saw a video and learned how to use and maintain the CPAP and accessories.

There are a variety of different mask options to choose from.  I was prescribed the mask on the right since that’s the type I used during the sleep study.  We’ll see how this one works for me in the long run.

So I’ve been using this for a few nights now.  It’s taking some time to adjust.  One night, my allergies were really bugging me so I could wear my mask with all of the nasal congestion I was experiencing.  I’m also trying to figure out which humidity setting is ideal for me.

Although having to use and maintain this equipment is a nuisance, I know I need it.  I hope this works.  Perhaps, this will help me resolve some of my other health issues and I can get back to more regular and intense workouts.

I Lost My Balance

Wow… It has been months since my last post.  Although I probably had a lot to blog about, I just didn’t have the self-discipline to sit down and write.  In fact, these last few months I didn’t have the self-discipline to to do a lot of things.  I lost my balance.

Pretty much since the fall, I’ve preoccupied myself with my commitments to family, work, and church.  Unfortunately, I allowed my commitment to my own health and fitness has taken a back seat to the busyness of life.  I have not been exercising consistently and I have not been as careful as I should be with my food.  I’ve had episodes of high blood pressure and high blood sugar.  Thankfully, I have not gained a lot of weight back.

I need an intervention.  I need to regain my balance and get back on track.  I am not going to wait for January 1, 2013 to start.  I will be writing some new goals down soon… that will be my next post.  And no, it won’t be several months before my next blog post!

Have you started thinking about your health and fitness goals fro 2013?  What are some of your goals?

A Magical Birthday

Today (yesterday) was my wife’s birthday! Although she was another year older today, our date today made us feel like we back in our early 20s. I’m not sure what it was… perhaps there was magic involved.

Or maybe it was the fact that my mom kept an eye on the kids for us so we could go out on our own. Or maybe it was where we spent most of the day. Much of our pre-marriage dating days were spent in Santa Cruz, CA near the ocean so walking along La Jolla Cove today helped bring us back to those days early in our relationship. We spent about three hours at La Jolla Cove today walking, talking, sitting… taking every thing in. We even had lunch and dessert in the area. It was a perfect day!

We took a lot of pictures today but I don’t want to inundate this post with all of those pics. Here are a few of the shots we took today. If you’d like to see more pictures of our outing at La Jolla Cove, see my Instagram feed here.  I also started using an app called 360 Panorama… Here’s the link if you’d like to see my panoramic shots.

After our time at La Jolla Cove, we decided to drive up to Mount Soledad, another place we used to frequent early in our relationship. The top of Mount Soledad has spectacular views but it is also home to a cross that is part of a veteran memorial that has been surrounded by quite a bit of controversy over the years. My wife and I were actually surprised, but excited to see that it was still there!

Later that evening, my folks wanted to take the family out to dinner for Maria’s birthday. She chose one of her favorite places to eat, Souplantation.

We ended the night back at my parents’ house (where we’ve been staying during this trip) for cake, presents, and karaoke!

Maria described today as magical… I am happy to have been part of it.

What is your most magical or memorable birthday? What made it so?

Charging My Batteries

Have you been charging your phone (or laptop, or camera,…) and for some reason or another you needed to unplug it before it was fully charged?

Not quite fully charged…

Well, that’s how I always feel about myself near the end of every summer before going back to the classroom. I know, I have little room to complain since I get a couple of months of during the summer. But, still, I never feel like I get to the point where my battery if fully charged.

It probably doesn’t help that I sometimes still do school-related things during the summer. Thankfully, my wife and I didn’t have to attend any teacher conferences during these last two months but I did meet with some of my colleagues a couple of times to plan some things for the upcoming school year.

This week, my wife and I decided to go to spend a few days in San Diego for one more chance to complete the recharge before school starts.

We arrived Wednesday evening and we were greeted by an amazing San Diego sunset.

Yesterday, I started my day out with a run at Coronado. Coronado is now officially one of my favorite places to run. There’s something about running near the water…

After some solo time, I spent the rest of the day with the family… mostly at the community pool where my parents live.

We finished the day off with a trip to the movies. My dad decided to treat me, my wife, and my 12-year-old son to see “Bourne Legacy.” We enjoyed it! The first 20 minutes were pretty slow but after that the movie was great! Don’t worry, no spoilers here.

Today, I’m looking forward to another day in San Diego. Hopefully, my batteries will be fully charged before I head back to OC.

How do you recharge your batteries? What do you have planned for your Friday and weekend?

Need for Adjustment

The month of August is always a time of adjustment for me and my family.  While it’s difficult to believe that summer vacation is nearly over, all of the “Back-to-School” ads and displays are constant reminders that I’ll have start going to bed at a decent time and reteach myself how to set my alarm clock.  This August, however, I have to deal with a different kind of adjustment.

A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I bought a Groupon for 3 sessions at a chiropractic office for $39.  I didn’t think I had any issues with my spine but we figured it was a great deal.  My first session was last Friday: my back was scanned, they took x-rays of my neck, and I received a minor adjustment (since I was a newbie).

Results from my scan: red & black stripes not a good sign

My second and third sessions were yesterday: first a massage, then the chiropractic appointment.  During our appointment, the chiropractor showed me the results of my x-rays.

X-ray results

Apparently, I’m entering Phase 3 Subluxation:

On the left (profile), you can see how my neck doesn’t have the curve it supposed to have.  We should also be able to see more black space between the vertebrae but instead they are compressed.  There are also a couple of calcium deposits forming that could later form bone spurs.

On the right (front view), you can see how the two lower vertebrae don’t line up with the two above.

As the chiropractor was interpreting the images to me, I kept thinking about what could have happened to make my neck in such bad shape.

Was it one critical event?

  • Falling off my bike when I was 9?
  • Rolling off of the top bunk when I was 10?
  • Being terrible during the gymnastics unit in junior high p.e. class?
  • My pole vaulting accident in 1992?

Was it a more chronic behavior over time?

  • Playing tenor saxophone for years with a non-ergonomically sound neck strap?
  • Being a belly-down sleeper?
  • Wearing only my backpack with one shoulder strap throughout high school?

The answer is… it could’ve been anything, a combination of things, or none of those things!  Although the damage isn’t totally reversible, a series of chiropractic adjustments can help prevent further degeneration.  It looks like I’ll be coming in for several weeks, three times a week to get adjustments.  Thankfully, my chiropractor is giving me a teacher discount!

Have you ever been to a chiropractor?  What was your experience like?

Endless Summer? I wish…

Wow! It’s been a long time since my last post!  How is it already August 1st?  You’d think with it being summer that I’d be blogging more… oops!

I’m happy to report that this has been a great summer.  This is the first summer in a long time where neither my wife nor I had to attend any school-related conferences.  It was nice to not have to think about school/work for a few weeks.

These weeks have been fun-filled with family and friends.

Family:  We got to visit my family in San Diego and my wife’s family in the Fresno area.

San Diego!

Biking on Coronado

Pre-movie lunch in Fresno

Packing up the car on our last morning in Fresno

Friends: We spent time at the beach and went camping with our friends from our Becoming One adult fellowship.

Relaxing at Huntington Beach

Perfect sunset to end a perfect day at the beach.

My buddy let us borrow his 12-person tent for this camping trip… it was huge!

Happy campers!

Leading campfire songs with guitar and ukulele!

Late nights playing “Settler of Catan”

All-in-all, this has been a very stress-free summer.  Hopefully my batteries will be fully charged in time for the start of school later this month.  In the meantime, I’m going to relax and enjoy these days off while I can.

What have you been up to this summer?  How has your summer been?

Mothers Day Weekend Recap

Mothers Day Weekend was a busy one!  It started out Friday evening when my son and wife came home not feeling well.  We originally planned to head down to San Diego right after school but we decided to exercise prudence and go to urgent care while we still in town.

By the time we got out of urgent care and picked up the meds we were all too tired to make the two hour drive.  While my family rested, I found myself restless.  I decided it was a good time to try out a cookie recipe that Jennah shared with me.  I figured cookies would make a nice present for my Mom this weekend.  They were delicious!

We finally hit the road for San Diego the next morning.  Thankfully, traffic was not an issue. We made one pit stop at about the halfway point in Carlsbad.

The reason for our visit to San Diego was two-fold: Mothers Day and my Mom’s birthday.  The festivities for my Mom weren’t going to be happening until later in the afternoon so my wife and I went out on quick date to get some gelato.

On the way back from our date, my car started to show signs of trouble!  Gah!  Perfect timing, right?!!!

It was too late in the evening to take it to a shop and I wasn’t going to try to drive my car back home tonight with all of those indicator lights on!  Thankfully, my dad was going to be out of town on business and he suggested we borrow his car for the week and that he’d take it into a shop for me when he got back home later in the week.  Wow… I’m lucky to have such accommodating parents.

With the problem solved, it was back to celebrating my Mom.  Here’s a picture of her with her grandkids… She doesn’t look a 60-year-old grandma, does she?

I take more after my Dad, so it isn’t likely that I’ll look so young when I’m 60.  Doh!

After all of the festivities wound down, we headed back home.  We had to be at church the next day and I wanted to make sure my wife got to enjoy her Mothers Day.

The kids and I woke up early Sunday morning to make breakfast.  The 9-year-old was in charge of the waffles and fruit.  The 12-year-old was in charge of eggs.

Mommy had breakfast in bed and was showered with love. Sorry, no picture available…

While they got to cuddle a little more in bed, I headed back down to the kitchen to prepare  my contribution to the Mothers Day potluck brunch at our adult fellowship at church.  The husbands were in charge of feeding the masses.  I decided to keep it simple and healthy by bringing fruit.  I bought a watermelon, two cantaloupes, and two honeydew melons.  I had visions of an amazing watermelon sculpture but it wasn’t gonna happen.  I had neither the time nor the talent… oh well.  Here is a photo of the final product:

We made it to our class at church.  There was plenty of food and fellowship.

This was my plate.

After church, we gave my wife some time to relax (nap).  After a little while, we went out for lunch (since the kids didn’t attend the brunch).  We went to one of our favorite Mexican buffets in Fullerton.  This was one of my plates.  I admit, I over-did it…

All-in-all, it was a good weekend.  How did you spend Mothers Day Weekend?

Working on That Next Step

Last week I wrote about going beyond the first step and I can honestly say that I’m making progress.  I’ve been more consistent with my workouts:

I’ve also spent more time in my walk with God.  I still need to get into the habit of reading His Word more but I am praying more.  Getting closer to God has helped my relationship with my wife get stronger, too.  We even made the time to go out on a couple of dates together!

I know that maintaining my footing in this journey isn’t going to be easy… but I do know that if I keep taking these steps I will be rewarded.

How are your personal goals going?

Beyond the First Step

“All great masters are chiefly distinguished by the power of adding a second, a third, and perhaps a fourth step in a continuous line. Many a man has taken the first step. With every additional step you enhance the value of your first.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

This quote was used to open the presentation in my adult fellowship class this past Sunday.  It convicted me…

I’ve taken pride in taking “that first step” — many times.  I’ve become a master at that first step but never following it with enough steps to create remarkable journey.  I haven’t walked the walk far enough… whether it be in my fitness journey, my professional journey, or my spiritual journey.

I decided to take another first step in my fitness journey this week.  I’ve owned P90X for a couple of years now.  I’ve started it several times but I’ve never completed the entire 90 days.  I have a new resolve now.  I will see the 90 days through.

Last night, I started with Day 1.

More importantly, I will also take more steps in my walk with God.  I will read His word daily.  I will pray at least daily– individually, with my kids, and with my wife. I know with God’s grace, this spiritual journey will have positive effects on the other areas of my life.

In the past, I failed continue to follow each step with another step because I tried to walk the journey(s) alone.  I’m so blessed to be part of a wonderful community of fitness friends and believers.  Can I ask a favor of you?  Can you help keep me accountable?
